This film for NSPCC required that we create a representation of a soundwave of a call to Childline. We discussed what the look and feel of the lines should be like with director Jake Mengers, and then got to work on developing a technique for achieving the desired results.
We created a particle driven system which analysed the audio to create the waveform, but allowed us to layer animation and various turbulence effects onto it. This gave us the flexibility we required to accomodate changes in the audio track, of which there were numerous, as well as giving the director the freedom to experiment with camera placement and animation of the lines.
The result is a striking yet subtle film that uses 3D animation in a very interesting way, and also succeeds in getting the intended message across.
